Waist Up/Waist Down: An Evening of Schiaparelli and Prada
on May 16th, 2012 at 4:17 pmLiving in New York brings all sorts of opportunities to my door and because of that (and my very resourceful roommate being an art
history major) I was able to attend the Waist Up/Waist Down: An Evening of Schiaparelli and Prada at the Metropolitan Museum. Now I realize everyone who lives in the tri-state area has probably been to the Met at least one time in their life, so maybe this isn’t as big a deal as I’d like to think it was, but it was a whole new experience for me.
Being a lover of fashion I wait for the Costume exhibit to open every spring. Last summer it was the late, and devastatingly fabulous
Alexander McQueen and this year is was dedicated to Schiaparelli and Prada. The exhibit’s focus was “waist down” and “waist up” fashion, Prada focusing on waist down pieces and Schiaparelli on waist up pieces. From shoes to hats to entire outfits, both halves of the body were equally, and elegantly portrayed.
Now the Met rarely disappoints, and just simply displaying art is not something they are known for, so as you walk through the exhibit a conversation, the “impossible conversation,” between the two designers its being projected onto the walls as the two women discuses why they believe the fashion of waist up or waist down is more important.
Not only was the exhibit invigorating in the sense of fashion, but the event was also beautifully done. We were provided with free
refreshments, live DJ, and nothing but simulating company. There was a photo booth with silly props like red lips and mustaches to take silly pictures with your friends and an “arts and crafts” station to make your own fashion.
It was a night to dress in your own best waist up or waist down ensemble, thrown on your heels and enjoy some serious New York City fashion, and sometimes that’s what living in this city is all about.
